THE SHORT ANSWER
Fair customer trade means showing the full price, not just a headline saving. Perception's launch membership is £35.00 a month, with coffee paid for separately and a limit of 10 retail bags a month. One of each launch coffee costs £19.10 for coffee, or £54.10 including membership, before delivery. The listed retail comparison is £58.25.
I want farmers paid properly. I also want you to get a fair deal. That should not be a controversial position, but somehow coffee pricing can make it feel like you have to choose.
I'm Ali from Perception. My take is simple: charge what you need to run a proper business, then be clear about it. Do not hide the real bill behind a lifestyle shoot and a massive savings headline. Your money deserves more respect than that.
Why is specialty coffee expensive?
The price of a bag is not just the price of green coffee. Processing, transport, roasting, packaging, labour and running a business all have to be paid for. A thoughtful roaster has real costs, and a higher price is not automatically a rip-off.
What I push back on is the idea that customers should not ask. A premium needs an explanation. A farm name, a rare variety or a difficult process can explain something about a coffee, but none of those details tells you the full margin or proves a farmer received a fair payment.
Fair customer trade is the phrase I use for treating the person buying the coffee properly. It is not a certification. It means clear comparisons, visible fees and no pretending that every customer will save money.
At Perception, the membership is the margin
Our launch offer has one plan: £35.00 a month. Members can buy up to 10 retail bags a month from our four-coffee collection, paying the listed member coffee price separately. The membership fee does not include 10 bags.
We describe the coffee as sold at our cost price, with the membership providing the margin. The published catalogue shows the retail and member prices side by side. That is our pricing model, not a claim that the member bag price is what a grower receives.
Membership ordering is not available yet. Selecting a coffee on the shop is a preference preview, not a paid order. Joining now is about the founding waitlist and the deposit, not an immediate monthly coffee delivery.
The actual launch prices, per 200g bag
Here are the numbers. No mystery discount maths.
- Colombia El Jaragual Rosado: listed retail £17.00, member coffee price £5.20, gross bag saving £11.80.
- Costa Rica Finca Reina Elizabeth: listed retail £15.75, member coffee price £4.80, gross bag saving £10.95.
- Ethiopia Idido · Floral Funk: listed retail £13.00, member coffee price £5.00, gross bag saving £8.00.
- Colombia La Viña Natural: listed retail £12.50, member coffee price £4.10, gross bag saving £8.40.
Does the £35 membership actually save you money?
One bag of each coffee has a listed retail total of £58.25. The member coffee total is £19.10. That is £39.15 less on coffee, but the £35.00 monthly membership still needs to come off the saving.
Include membership and you are at £54.10 before delivery. The saving against the listed retail bag total is £4.15 before delivery. This is a comparison with our stated retail prices, not a claim that every other shop charges that amount.
That four-bag order is below the free-shipping threshold. With the listed £3.50 delivery tier, the member outlay is £57.60. That is only £0.65 below the £58.25 retail bag total, which does not include any retail delivery charge. Small difference. Worth being straight about.
Buying more bags can make the membership work harder, within the 10-bag monthly limit. Buying one or two bags may not justify the fee. Compare your actual basket, include delivery and be honest about how much coffee you will use.
Delivery, the deposit and the bits people forget
UK shipping is free on orders over £25. Otherwise, the published tracked tiers are £3.50 up to 1kg, £4.00 up to 2kg and £6.00 up to 5kg. Check the full order total, not just the bag price.
The founding deposit is a one-off £10 payment, credited towards the first month of the £35 membership. It is not an extra monthly plan and it is not a payment for a bag. The first 100 founding members lock in the £35 monthly rate permanently, with cancellation available.
A membership should fit your habit. You should not need to buy coffee you do not want just to make a savings claim come true.
A fairer price is not a race to the bottom
Cutting corners on quality or pushing the problem back onto farmers would miss the point. The question is whether we can organise the business differently and make the price easier to understand.
That is what Perception is trying to do. Not the cheapest coffee at any cost. Good coffee, a visible membership fee and enough information for you to decide whether the deal works for your home. If it does not, I would rather you know before you join.
Questions, answered
Does the £35 membership include coffee?
No. The £35 monthly fee gives access to member coffee prices. Coffee is purchased separately, with a maximum of 10 retail bags a month. Membership ordering is not yet available.
How much do four Perception coffees cost with membership?
One of each launch coffee costs £19.10 for coffee plus £35.00 membership, totalling £54.10 before delivery. With the listed £3.50 delivery tier, the total is £57.60.
Will every member save money?
No. The result depends on the coffees, bag count and delivery. Include the £35 monthly fee in your comparison. A light coffee drinker may be better off without a membership.
